What is tannin?
Tannins are polyphonic substances synthesized in plants, particularly in the bark. The biological role of tannins is that of defense ; in fact, their expression occurs in correspondence with the points of damage to the leaves or other parts of the plant following an attack by predators.
Basically, tannins are molecules that protect plants. But more than taste, tannins also have a tactile effect in the mouth.
It has many benefits and is rich in polyphenols whose antioxidant benefits have continued to be praised for several years. It also helps limit the side effects of caffeine.
Once taken orally , tannins reach the intestinal walls unmodified, where they are transformed by bacterial flora. They can then exert their astringent , anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal , antibacterial , hemostatic and antioxidant actions.
Tannin in mate drink
Tannins are found in all plants , it is a substance common to all plants, it is found in particular in the mate drink . Yerba mate contains up to 16% tannin but in a very small quantity compared to tea or coffee, which allows you to feel its negative effects only slightly while enjoying its many benefits for the human body.
In the Maté drink we find tannin which has the effect of reducing the exciting power of caffeine. Tannins, combined with hydrochloric acid from the stomach, trap some of the caffeine. This therefore weakens the side effects of caffeine. The longer and/or hotter the infusion, the higher the quantity of tannins in the drink.
